Well I am at an interesting crossroads. I’ve taken a new approach on my work and life balance. Working through the week and weekends with early mornings and late nights are in my recent past. Which at some point I’ll probably shed some more light on and satisfy all that curiosity that is out there ;-).
In my today life, I have taken the time to sit back and reflect, while reducing my workload and focusing on things that seem to matter to me right now outside of work. Like riding a bicycle. Interestingly enough I never grew up riding a bicycle. So it’s a whole new world for me. Especially navigating through busy city streets. The history of it is pretty simple and not a very exciting story, but my parents were amazing enough to buy me a bike when I was little and shortly thereafter it was stolen. By my neighbor I presume. And that was that. My parents offered to get me another, however I was busy with soccer and then ventured away to Culver. So, it’s funny because I am really enjoying it now. I think partly because not only do I take casual bike rides, but also it has become a means to an end for me. Like bicycling to an event or speaking engagement, etc … I guess with my personality I just needed a goal, a destination, the feeling of multitasking, so I don’t feel like I am wasting time. I know it seems a bit odd. I can hear my family saying, “oh Avneesh, that figures you’d feel that way.” [With a side to side nodding of the head and a smile].
The fact is that the multitasking part of it all is what drives me to continue bicycling. The fresh air, the exploration, the fitness, meeting with friends at the park, getting to know my community in the local bike coalition and most of all … the time spent with my wife. Actually the credit goes to her. She motivated me to purchase a bicycle with her. She now regularly commutes to work on her bike and though I am still trying to remember to use hand signals while traversing the city of San Francisco, I get out at least a few times a week!
The fact is that it is becoming a simple part of my life. A balanced way of life that I incessantly strive towards. Getting the exercise and the peace of mind while continuing to be productive is a winning strategy to me!
